...and if our gaze was to creep lower…
Victor Noir is depicted on his monument in bronze, lying as he died, having been shot by Prince Pierre Bonaparte in 1870, his hat laying at his side.
The face is incredibly realistic but looking closer you will notice something odd, that the area around his mouth is missing the patina of age that is present on (nearly) the rest of the monument… and if our gaze was to creep lower…
Another part of Victor Noir’s anatomy that is quite detailed and missing the patina of age is the groin area. Victor Noir’s groin is quite prononced and whether it be a fold in his clothing or in fact a part of ‘him’, it has formed part of a legend around this very monument.
It is said that if a woman kisses the statue on the lips, rubs the protubence, and places a flower in the hat, it will bring enhanced fertility and possibly a husband/lover.
Many, many thousands of people have visited the tomb, performed the ritual, and left those strategic areas of Victor Noir well worn and polished. The number of visitors and interactions became so high that in 2004 the cemetery had a fence erected around the tomb to deter any future rubbings, but was later removed due to popular demand.
As for the claims of enhanced fertility?
Many photos of children have been left in Mr Noir’s hat over the years, children believed to have been conceived soon after a visit and rubbing of Mr Noirs bits.
