 Faceless ghosts are believed to be unaware of their own identity. They borrow the looks of living people, melding their otherwise featureless expressions into the likeness of others.
They differ from dopplegangers in that they borrow the looks of many people, whoever they can get close to.

 The vengeful spirit of a young woman, cut in half, preys on young people who stray into her domain after dark. She chases down those in her sights, running on hands that make a "teke-teke" sound, as they slap the ground.
Just looking at her invites a sentence of being sliced in half.  "Am I beautiful?" If you ever run into Kuchisake-onna, aka 'The Slit Mouthed Woman', your answer to this question will very much decide your fate.
However you answer, you will be left either dead, disfigured or both... unless you can find a way to confuse her.  In 1818 Elisabeth Demidoff died. She was buried in a large mausoleum in Père-Lachaise, one of the largest mausoleums in the cemetery.
In Elisabeth’s last Will and testament, it was rumoured to tell of a vast fortune for anyone who could spend a year in her tomb...  Lacrymatory (also Lachrymatory) are bottles used to catch the tears of those in sorrow over a beloved ones absence during war, or the tears of mourning during a funeral.
Although not a common item these days, one may still find them at a grave side, used as a vase for a single flower.  “Sleep well sweet angel, let no fears of ghouls disturb thy rest, for above thy shrouded form lies a torpedo, ready to make minced meat of anyone who attempts to convey you to the pickling vat.”
So reads the advertisement for a 'Grave Torpedo', a device that existed to thwart grave robbers.  On 11 December, 1993, Block 1 of the Highland Towers apartments in Malaysia collapsed after ten days of rain and flooding caused a landslide.
48 people lost their lives, but it is said not all rest in peace, as their spirits have been seen about the ruins in the jungle that now reclaims the land.  A haunting is typically defined as occurrences of anomalous activity at a location, or about an object or person that is attributed to a 'ghosts' presence.
This post looks more into hauntings of locations, but much of the information holds true to hauntings of people and objects.  A ghost is the manifestation of the spirit of a deceased person, or other living being. A ghost can haunt a person, object or place and can appear in many different ways.
It is typically in reference to a visual manifestation, though it can be extended to those that affect the other senses.  Electronic Voice Phenomenon - EVP - is the recording of an apparent 'ghostly' voice or sound, caught on sound recording technology.
These are thought to be voices from the other side, that recorders are sensitive enough to pick up, but the human ear cannot otherwise hear. |
