November 11 - 17: Residents of the Lough Mask area of County Mayo, Ireland, stage a boycott. - 'Pillars of light' are seen in the early morning skies over Hereford, England. - Edward Gein the 'Plainfield Ghoul' kills his final victim and his crimes are uncovered.

PictureCaptain Charles Boycott
On this day residents of the Lough Mask area of County Mayo, Ireland, began to ostracise land agent Captain Charles Boycott over disputes of rent and tenant exploitation. Everyone in the community cut all ties to Boycott, refusing to talk to him, many shops refused to serve him, labour to Boycotts lord's estate and fields was cut and people refused to do his laundry.

Boycott eventually wrote a letter to The Times who publicised this 'victimisation' and soon troops and constables were sent to Lough Mask to harvest the crops. This amounted to £10,000 of cost to the British government in order to harvest about £500 worth of crops.

Boycott left Ireland for Suffolk less than a month after the 'Boycott' had started.

PictureLeonids shower 1833
Residents of Hereford, England, watch as pillars of light flash up in the sky. Starting in the early hours of the morning the light show continues, further lights flashing periodically before exploding.

This event was complete with what looked like a pillar of fire streaking across the sky.

No doubt this would have seemed quite 'biblical' for those living nearby but across the world a different perspective of the event provides an answer.

Throughout the night skies across America and Europe hundreds of thousands of shooting stars rained across the skies for several hours.

The cause – every 33 years the earth passes through the tail of the Temple – Tuttle comet creating the most brilliant of light shows.

PictureEdward Theodore Gein
Edward Theodore Gein walks into his local hardware store, locks the door behind him, walks to behind the counter, grabs a .22 rifle off the rack, loads it and shoots at Bernice Worden, hitting her and killing her. Gein then takes the body back home after robbing the till of its contents – about $4.

Worden is soon discovered to be missing and her son, a deputy, suspected Gein as he had run into Gein the day previously. Gein had told the deputy that he would be by the store for some antifreeze the next day – the last receipt written at the stores register before Wordens disappearance was for antifreeze.

Police descended on the Gein property – Gein was known to be a little odd, especially after his mother had died some years before hand – and there they discovered a most grisly scene...

Bernice Wordens body was found in the Gein barn, hanging upside down from a meat hook. She had been dressed and gutted much like one would a deer. The body was essentially free of blood and had obviously been washed out.

What they discovered in the house was worse, much worse. Many more bodies and many curious objects made from human bodily remains.

It is not entirely certain how many people Gein killed, but murder was far from his only crime as he also liked to dig up corpses from the local cemetery – corpses of women that resembled his dead mother...

Gein was tried and found not guilty for reasons of insanity and placed in a secure hospital for the criminally insane. He was tried again in 1968 where he was found guilty of first degree murder but was also found to be legally insane.
