aka - Afreet, Afrite, Efreet, Eftite, Ifreet and Ifrit
Description: Powerful winged demon of fire, sometimes viewed as the Christian idea of the hooved and horned red devil.
This demon is said to rise like a dark vapour from the blood of victims of murder. Given the unjust way this demon comes to life, so to speak, it is said it instills appalling terror and brutality into its prey. This demon is said to live in the underworld, complete with tribal hierarchy. According to legend, the Afrit are able to marry and procreate with other Afrit’s, and they can also marry humans to enter the human world.
There are two known ways to avoid or protect against the Afrit. One states that a ‘new’ nail is to be driven into the blood stained ground where a murder has taken place, to prevent the Afrit from rising from the underworld. The other is magic. The Afrit is weak against magic, and those who are able to conduct such magic hold the power to kill, capture or enslave the Afrit.
In Arabic and Islamic folklore the Afrit is known as a powerful, supernatural animal-type creature.
