Dead Baby Trees of the Toraja

Many of the Torajan people living in Tana Toraja have a unique way of 'burying' their dead children.

If the child is not yet of teething age they are taken to one of the villages 'baby trees'. A hole is carved in the trunk and the baby is placed inside, before the hole is resealed.

"We bury the babies in these trees so their souls can go with the wind."

Hallstatt Bone House

With burial space running out, and cremation not an option, the people of Hallstatt, Austria, came up with a solution...

After being buried for a decade, bodies were exhumed and the bones bleached in the sun and moonlight, before being decorated and placed in the "Bone House".

Burke and Hare

Between 1827 and 1828 William Burke and William Hare murdered at least 16 people to provide fresh bodies to the local anatomy school.

Had they not gotten so cocky, it may have been quite lucrative, as each body fetched approximately £10, a large sum for those days.

Hart Island – New York's Potter's Field

Purchased from local Native Americans in 1654, Hart Island has been used as a internment camp, drug rehabilitation centre, isolation hospital, several prisons, a lunatic asylum and more.

However, it is better known for the children and adults buried there, in the worlds largest tax funded cemetery.

Giovanni Aldini – Reanimating the Dead!

Giovanni Aldini was the nephew of Luigi Galvani, the man who discovered that a dead frogs legs could be made to kick with the application of a spark.

Aldini carried out similar experiments, but took them to the next level once he obtained the corpses of freshly executed criminals.

Accidental Mummies of Guanajuato

In the city of Guanajuato, Mexico, there is a museum displaying mummified remains of those dug up after families were unable to pay the 'grave tax'.

As corpses were disinterred, it was discovered that a small percentage had been naturally mummified, and that a few had been buried alive.

Taken in 1924, this photograph of the Dunrobin State School No. 3777 has an element to it that just does not seem quite right. The children's faces, all morose, any smiles looking forced, give a hint to the discomfort they are feeling.

Lacrymatory - Tear Catchers

Lacrymatory (also Lachrymatory) are bottles used to catch the tears of those in sorrow over a beloved ones absence during war, or the tears of mourning during a funeral.

Although not a common item these days, one may still find them at a grave side, used as a vase for a single flower.
