September 9 - 15: London Cab driver George Smith is the first person to be arrested for drunk driving, after crashing into a building. - Hamida Djandoubi is the last person to be executed by guillotine in France. - The worlds largest elephant in captivity, 'Jumbo', is hit by a train and killed in Canada.
September 2 - 8: The Great Fire of London begins when a baker neglects to sufficiently extinguish his oven. - "Benjamin", the last Thylacine in captivity, dies. - The handle of a public water pump in London is removed in an attempt to end the deadly cholera epidemic.
August 26 - September 1: Krakatoa, a volcanic island, explodes, killing tens of thousands of people. - Jack the Ripper claims his first (known) victim, Mary Ann Nichols. - John Horrocks, early settler of the Clare Valley in South Australia, is shot by his camel!
August 19 - 25: New York newspaper 'The Sun' reports that Sir John Herschel, famous astronomer, has discovered life on the moon. - A lake 'erupts' in Cameroon, killing nearly 2000 people as they sleep - Michael O'Neill returns from a holiday in Australia, only to find out that he is dead!
August 12 - 18: A fireball, shooting beams of light/fire, appears over a small Russian village, the entire event chronicled by a monastery monk - 'The King' Elvis Presley is dead... or is he? - One hundred or so colonists from Roanoke Colony disappear, giving rise to the name 'The Lost Colony'.
August 5 - 11: Actress Marilyn Monroe is found dead in her bed from 'probable' suicide, though not all agree - William Kemmler is the first man to be executed in the electric chair - Atomic bombings of the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Japan are conducted by the United States.
