![]() "She looked very delicious" says Issei Sagawa, cannibal "I wondered if I could eat her." In June 1981, Issei Sagawa murdered and partially consumed Renee Hartevelt. For his crime, he served some time in a French Gaol, then a mental institution, before being extradited to Japan. Today he is a free man and has developed a celebrity status over the years, even writing, of all things, restaurant reviews. ![]() In mid-1917, Frances Griffiths and Elsie Wright borrowed a camera belonging to Elsie's father. The girls headed down to the stream which ran through the bottom of their families property, in Cottingley, West Yorkshire. When Elsie's father developed the photographic plate, it revealed an image of four fairies, playing and dancing around ten year old Frances. When the photograph's reached the public, the "Cottingley Fairies", as they are known, became some of the most famous photo's of their time. ![]() Since the Sunnyvale Toys'R'Us store opened in the early 1970's, staff and customers have experienced a wide range of strange goings on! The photograph you see here was taken during a séance held at the store, for a television show that was looking into the haunting. Taken with an infrared sensitive camera, the photo shows the seated group, together with a figure standing at the back, watching. No one present remembers seeing anyone standing during the séance, and other cameras shooting the same view all failed to capture this figure. ![]() "It is the greatest mystery of all because no human being will ever solve it. It is the highest suspense because no man can bear it. It is the greatest fear because it is the ancient fear of the unknown. It is a warning foretold for thousands of years. It is our final warning. It is The Omen." So reads the tagline for The Omen, a film about the Antichrist, a film, some said, should never have been made. Was it cursed? ![]() The Bushranger Hotel was built in 1860 as Kimberley's Commercial Hotel. It was one of the five original inns built in Collector, to serve the many people travelling to and from the Kiandra Goldfields. Although the Goldfield days were quite rough and tumble, it was not until January 26, 1865, when bushranger Ben Hall and his gang entered Collector, that it would be put on the map. It was Constable Nelson and teenaged bushranger John Dunn who would make history that day. ![]() Scaphism was a method of execution that was designed to inflict a lingering, painful and humiliating death, to those who were unfortunate enough to experience it. The victim would be trapped between two boats, or other hollow objects, and their exposed head, arms and legs covered in honey. They would then be force fed nothing but milk and honey, before being left in the sun, or in a stagnant pool. Flies, other insects and rodents would be attracted to the victim, and would slowly eat them from both within and without. ![]() In 1893 Dr Henry Howard Holmes opened the 'Worlds Fair' Hotel, a massive three story, block long structure known locally as 'The Castle'. However it also had another purpose; murder. Using a series of different contractors, Holmes constructed a labyrinthine series of rooms, secret passages, false doors, stairways to nowhere and the many traps and murder devices. It was in the basement that he would perform his dissections and other grisly works. ![]() Mellified Man is a sweet, human medicine, said to cure any illness. An elderly man would diet on, and bathe in, nothing but honey, until he became 'mellifluous'. His body would be interred in a stone coffin, also filled with honey, and sealed for a hundred years. After the allotted time, the result was a mummified human corpse, preserved in a sweet substance - a much sought after medicine, capable of curing a wide range of ailments. ![]() Once the largest resort hotel in the world, the Hotel del Coronado, opened in 1888, hosted the who's who of the world's elite, as well as being the playground for Hollywood stars. However in 1892, the body of a woman was discovered, with a gunshot wound to the head. It was later found out that the woman had used a fake name on check in and had no personal possessions in her room. Who was she and does she still haunt the Hotel del Coronado? |
